Why John Cairns is engaged with DYW Moray?

June 5, 2019

John Cairns, Community Benefits Adviser at Balfour Beatty has been heavily involved in engaging with Moray Schools through the curriculum.  Balfour Beatty are currently constructing a new school for Lossie High School resulting in them having a great link with the school.  John has been all over Moray - highlighting what the construction industry is and careers within it through interactive workshops and talks.  John said,

"The DYW Moray team have greatly helped Balfour Beatty to work with schools and colleges in the Moray area. By taking this collaborative approach we have been able to engage even more young people at both individual schools events and regional events with our core community programme.

On a personal level, I have been impressed by the range of opportunities which are available for young people but also for industry partners in Moray. I really can’t recommend the DYW team and their programme highly enough and I would urge all employers to do what Balfour Beatty has done and utilise your local DYW team.”

By getting involved with young people at an earlier age you can create a pipeline of future employees.  You are contributing to creating a more robust workforce for the future and you are reducing the costs of recruiting if you source who is right for your business at an earlier stage.  Also, you are helping young people recognise what's on their doorstep in Moray and hopefully retaining them here as a result.  You are raising awareness on what your business does and finally, by having more young people coming into your business you are gaining fresh ideas and new perspectives.

It's not just large organisations that we engage with. We also encourage small and medium enterprises and those who are self-employed to engage with Moray young people in Education, as they can get a great return and reap these long term benefits.  The younger we positively influence young people about what Moray has to offer them the more impact it will have on our local economy.
