Ross Keddie, Career Ready Mentor Explains What He's Gained From The Programme

May 17, 2019

Ross Keddie, Northern Operations Manager, Chivas Brothers,

"It has been an incredible journey and real pleasure being a Career Ready Mentor….. At the outset I wasn’t quite sure what I would gain from the Career Ready Program, however the mentoring process has allowed me to develop my ability to motivate and encourage, communicate more effectively, increase my networking contacts and develop new professional relationships.

I have met a lot of fantastic people along the way, it has been a very worthwhile exercise and I would recommend it to any aspiring Manager or Business Leader!

I have gained a fresh perspective and new way of thinking in my role as a Mentor and it has been personally fulfilling knowing that I have contributed in a small way to my Mentee’s (Kate Garrow, Keith Grammar School) growth, development and preparedness for life beyond secondary school."

Career Ready is a national charity that links schools with employers to help prepare young people, who lack the advantages of social mobility, for the world of work.

Aimed at 15-18 years-olds, the programme is built on four areas of activity which give students regular contact with working people and places: face-to-face mentoring by someone in work; masterclasses to help develop key skills and attitudes needed in their future career; workplace visits that provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse of local and national employers; and a paid internship between S5 and S6 to allow students to put their learning into practice in a real work environment. 98% of Career Ready students are in a positive destination on leaving school.

Approximately, 20% of businesses who support Career Ready have recruited at least one student they met through the Career ready programme.  More than 270 employer organisations and more than 2000 employer volunteers support the delivery of the programme.

We currently work with 125 schools in twelve Local Authority areas across Scotland: Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Clackmannanshire, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Fife, Glasgow, Midlothian, Moray, Perth & Kinross, Stirling and West Lothian.  Schools from our 13th Local Authority, Dundee, will be working with us from September 2018.

The programme helps employers and schools to deliver ‘Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce’ recommendations and Career Ready is cited as an example of best practice in the CBI Scotland report, Delivering Excellence - A New Approach for Schools in Scotland.
