Craig Barron – Primary Teacher at Cullen Primary School

February 19, 2019

“Never stop learning as life never stops teaching”

Craig Barron, Primary Teacher from Cullen Primary School changed his career pathway from sports to teaching, following family members’ footsteps.

After completing his sixth year at Keith Grammar School, Craig went to Stirling University for 4 years to undertake Sports Studies.  Once Craig finished his degree, he travelled far and wide for 5 months including America, Australia, Fiji and New Zealand.

Returning to Moray, Craig worked full-time as a swimming instructor at Moray Leisure Centre.  In addition, he also worked as a relief coach for Moray Council part-time, coaching various sports clubs, which he loved doing.  Craig then moved on to work for the Moray Council as a Community Sports Hub Development Officer for several years before deciding he wanted to become a teacher.  Craig said,

“I loved coaching various sports to local children.  However, I wanted to become a teacher as I was really interested in watching the children develop socially and emotionally.”

Craig completed a one-year PGDE at Moray College UHI before becoming a teacher.  He explained that this was very convenient for him as the College was close to his home.  His NQT placement was at Lhanbryde Primary School and he is currently in a post at Cullen Primary School.

“It’s great getting to know the children, seeing the progress they are constantly making and watching them achieve something they originally said they couldn’t do.  I love how I can still be involved in certain aspects of sport as a teacher. I run sport clubs within the school and take my class for Physical Education.

If you are interested in teaching, take any opportunity to work with children.  You could volunteer, shadow teachers, help at after school clubs and do a variety of other work experience activities.  Universities, colleges and employers all look for work experience, so this is vital!  You should also make yourself aware of Curriculum for Excellence as some interviews will ask you about this.”
