Since 1797 Johnstons of Elgin have expanded their business and extended their mill and to date they employ over 1000 people – some having more than 40 years’ service.

 

Johnstons of Elgin offer Modern Apprenticeships to people of all ages – with 100 employees involved in their SQA accredited Modern Apprenticeship programme , as an apprentice, trainer/mentor or assessor – which helped the company achieve Investor in Young People Award at Gold standard earlier this year.

 

The award-winning business offers different working hours as well as full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal workers.  Within the company there are a wide range of different careers available such as Designers, Weavers, Supply Chain Coordinators, Customer Service Assistants, Finance and Marketing Careers, the list goes on and on…  Johnstons of Elgin also have a variety of different careers available in their Retail department.  Some of which include Tour Guides, Sales Assistants, Coffee Shop Assistants and Retail Merchandisers.

 

In terms of qualifications for Retail, these aren’t necessary.  However, previous retail / sales experience is desirable and good communication/interpersonal skills are a must in this industry.

Being part of the Retail team is an exciting opportunity to work within their Elgin store; welcoming and assisting customers while providing a 5-star retail experience at all times.  As well as assisting customers in store, some of the Retail staff will also be responsible for conducting mill tours following in-house training.  For this job it is essential that you have excellent communication skills to connect and build relationships with new and existing customers.  Johnstons of Elgin look for individuals who are passionate about the brand while committed to the customers, colleagues and store.  Sandra Baird, Retail Sales Assistant and Tour Guide said,

The family owned company undertakes a wide variety of school interactions to show to young people the opportunities the company has to offer upon leaving school.  Some of which include, work experience placements, school projects, career talks, workshops, workplace tours, presentations and mock interviews sessions.

 

When Darcie Stephenson was in S6 at Elgin High School she was involved in the Johnstons of Elgin School Interaction Programme.  Darcie was unsure what career path she wanted to follow, however the programme made her realise that she wanted to work for the local company, as she was aware what they could offer her.  During her last year in education, Darcie worked part-time in the shop as a Retail Sales Assistant and upon leaving school she started to work here full time and soon got promoted to a Senior Sales Assistant – resulting in her having more responsibility at such a young age!  Darcie said,

 

“Johnstons of Elgin has made me grow lots of skills and qualities!  I’ve now been working here for over 4 years and I’m really excited to see what my future career looks like at Johnstons of Elgin.”
