Cullen Bay Hotel is known for its friendly, relaxed feel – making the perfect getaway on the North-East coast of Scotland.
The hotel offers a wide variety of different jobs such as: Waiting Staff, House Keeping, Front of House, Gardener and Maintenance, Function Coordinator and many more… All the jobs within the hotel are just as important as without one job the hotel wouldn’t be able to function properly. Within the Kitchen there are lots of room for progression as there are various job opportunities available from Kitchen Porters all the way up to Head Chef.
Ian Watson bought over the hotel 5.5 years ago with his wife. The couple owned previous hotels but was in the search for a couple of years to find one that was unique. They searched the Highlands all the way down to the Boarders to find the right hotel before coming across the Cullen Bay Hotel. They both fell in love with it due to the location of the hotel, looking on to stunning views of the sea. Ian said,
“My duties are less within the hotel as I have such a strong team of employees. I do however step in wherever is needed such as the restaurant bar or in the kitchen – which is my favourite place to step in, due to my love for cooking! My favourite thing about owning the hotel is the diversity of the job – not one day is the same.
Within the hotel there are lots of room for progression. Currently we have a number of staff members going through various courses and qualifications - who all have different abilities. Anyone who’s interested in the hospitality industry seriously have lots of opportunities to progress. However, you do need to be prepared to work hard and committed to see the rewards.”
Michelle Bowman recently joined the team at the hotel in July 2018. She stated,
“At school I was good at cooking food and enjoyed learning about it which resulted in my guidance teacher guiding me into this sector. Upon finishing school, I went to college to study hospitality for 3 years in total. I’m currently continuing my studies at the Cullen Bay Hotel as they are putting me though an SVQ qualification in Kitchen Management which includes health and safety of the kitchen.
My favourite thing about this job is cooking the variety of different meals we have on offer. I’ve never worked over the Christmas period before so I’m looking forward to seeing how that looks this year. I really enjoy my job because recently I’ve taken on more responsibility due to a staff member leaving resulting in me being one of the chefs who’s most familiar with the menu.”
The Cullen Bay Hotel have been running a scheme every Thursday where they take two students at Pinefield Campus into the restaurant – giving them work experience waiting and in the kitchen learning key skills. The staff at the hotel get the young people to help cook the food and deliver a service to customers - making their work experience as interesting and as beneficial as possible.
