Deborah Smethurst from Elgin opened Alluring Boutique 15 months ago on Batchen Street, Elgin.  She felt as if there was such a lack of clothes shops in Elgin especially for a certain age of women.  Deborah also felt as if she was competing with daughter - wearing same clothes from New Look ect and wanted to do something about it.  She said,

“After leaving school I worked in various office shops.  I enjoyed doing this, but I was never fulfilled doing them!  A few years ago, my Dad suddenly died of cancer and I began to re-evaluated life.  I’ve always loved to open my own boutique, but I just never believed in myself to do it.  My Husband however encouraged me to open one, as I’ve always liked fashion and love talking to people.”

One thing Deborah’s enjoys most about her job is the buying and sourcing of the products for her boutique.  At least once a month Deborah will travel to London and Manchester to deal with agents based down there to source products for the boutique.  Sometimes she goes more than once a month - depending on the buying season.  Before opening the boutique, Deborah done over a year of research to find out what kind of products she wants to have displayed in her boutique.

The boutique takes in a minimum amount of the same meaning there’s much less likelihood of someone wearing the same item of clothing which is hugely beneficial in a small town.  When Deborah was doing research for the boutique, she found out that most people are spending more special items and buying less – and has set her business around her findings.

Alluring Boutique is more than just a boutique.  Deborah provides a one to one service while giving out styling advice to her customers.  She especially enjoys helping those who get out of their comfort zone and see them walking out the boutique with a product they wouldn’t normally go for.  She said,

“I love seeing the customers face when their delighted with a product.  I feel that it’s important to shop local and support local. I am really passionate about that - don’t be too quick to dismiss a shop or boutique as local business owners like myself put their heart and soul into their business.”
