Alan Mcconnell – Earthtime Nursery Modern Apprentice

August 22, 2018

After Alan McConnell completed his education in South Africa, he wasn’t sure on which career path he wanted to take and never thought he would be working in the Early Education and Childcare Sector today.

Alan, however secured a position in a bank after completing a Business Computing course at College.  After meeting his wife, he moved to Exeter in England, where he secured his next position working for a pension company.

In 2015, Alan and his family decided to move to Moray.

He said,

“I visited Moray before and thought it was a really nice place where I could bring up my daughter.  There is so much different things to do here including some of the stunning beaches right on our door step.”

When Alan moved to Moray he made the decision to stay at home and look after his daughter.  He first discovered Earthtime’s Outdoor Nursery in Duffus upon taking his daughter to ‘Waddle Toddles’, an activity the nursery provided.

A position soon became available at Earthtime and he thought it would be something totally different and exciting to his previous job roles.

In January 2016, Earthtime offered Alan to do a Child Practitioner Modern Apprenticeship which allowed him to gain an SVQ Level 2 and earn a wage at the same time.  He was also able to take his daughter to work which was very convenient being a parent and employee at the same time!

Alan explained,

“I would highly recommend doing a Modern Apprenticeship if the opportunity arises for anyone.  It’s a really good way to get into the world of work since your gaining hand on experience and with the children every day is different.  I don’t feel like I’m an ‘Apprentice’ because everyone within the work place is treated the same.  I just love my job and I find it very rewarding watching the children grow and see how they play and interact with each other at such a young age. I’ve done many different jobs and this one is the most rewarding so follow what you think is the best path for you.”

Earthtime is just one out of hundreds of business who offer local Modern Apprentice opportunities in Moray.  It can open so many doors for young people as employers’ value the experience you can gain from it so take Alan’s advice and grab every opportunity that comes your way!
