Johnstons of Elgin have over 220 years of expertise in textiles manufacturing - shipping out quality products globally to customers and high-end designers. The company has four different departments at their Elgin site, all offering a variety of Modern Apprenticeships, covering a wide range of different technical jobs roles.
They have recently received the Investors in Young People GOLD accreditation and already have over 100 employees who have successfully completed an apprenticeship. Daniel Harrison, from Elgin is now one of these individuals who were offered this opportunity which landed him a promotion in the end!
Daniel finished secondary education and initially decided to go to university.
However, he found it wasn’t suitable for him so soon left to join the Armed Forces as a Mechanical Engineer and Fabricating Welder. After 6 years passed, Daniel decided to come back to Moray in 2017 due to seeing a Carding Operator job arise at Johnstons of Elgin. He applied and within 3 days he was asked to an interview and was successful.
“At school I never expected to be working for Johnstons of Elgin and I never expected to come back to Elgin. However, 6 years passed, and I began to miss Elgin and knew it was my time to go back to my home town.”
After being in the Carding Operator role for a short period of time, the HR team reviewed Daniel’s work and thought it would be beneficial for him to do a Modern Apprenticeship. Daniel was delighted to have been given this opportunity.
Once Daniel completed his apprenticeship, he received a promotion to be a Spinning Chargehand due to all his hard work and dedication he had shown throughout.
“If you get an opportunity to do an apprenticeship go for it because you have nothing to lose! Not only did I receive a qualification from being an apprentice, I also received a promotion which I didn’t expect to happen. Everyone was very supportive in helping me achieve my apprenticeship and I received lots of one-to-one time with my supervisor going through everything in detail with me.”
Daniel’s story is another excellent example of the Modern Apprenticeship route into employment. You never know what the opportunity might lead to - perhaps a promotion like Daniel!
