Business Skills Foundation Apprentice – Aimee’s Story

July 16, 2018

“Along with my S6 subjects in 2017 - I decided to do the Business Skills Foundation Apprentice (FA) course at Moray College UHI.  My guidance teacher mentioned the opportunity and explained how beneficial it would be for my future career.

A Foundation Apprenticeship provides a work base learning opportunity one day a week for two years (S5-S6) - giving young people an opportunity to gain a higher-level qualification, hands on experience and a chance to attend college one day a week – all in which helped me develop new skills and qualities that I can use daily.

To complete the qualification, I had to do 150 hours of a work placement at NHS Grampian in the learning and facilities department.  Whilst on my placement I had to achieve different outcomes to pass the course - by writing personal statements about my day and backing it up with evidence.

Within this department I was treated as if I was a member of the team – undertaking various administration tasks such as creating emails, phoning different departments and outside organisations, booking people on to courses using an online system used by the NHS and creating Microsoft Word documents etc.  By completing a work placement meant I was able to learn new skills and enhance the skills I already had - making me more employable in the long run.

During my time at college, I attended 3 different classes which included: Advanced Word Processing and PowerPoints, Advanced Spreadsheets and Databases and a class learning about Small-to-Medium Enterprises.  I had to complete 4 different units in total which were all really interesting as each of my lectures were very informative.  They increased my knowledge and understanding about the sector I want to peruse a career in.

I knew I always wanted to go into the Business and Professional Services sector but by having this work experience confirmed that this is the right career path for me.  Having experience in a busy working environment, meant I was discovering what sort of tasks I will be undertaking if I did get a job in this sector.

From this course I’ve not only gained hands on experience, but I’ve now got a better understanding what it is like to work in a business environment.

By doing a FA in Business whilst still at school I have gained skills, qualities, and industry contacts through my placement at NHS Grampian.  I now realise I want to go into a working environment and learn on the job as a Modern Apprentice which I have achieved with DYW Moray as their Modern Apprentice in Business and Administration.

I would recommend a Foundation Apprenticeship at Moray College UHI to young people and parents across Moray and encourage them to consider this qualification as a great option in S5 and S6.  I still got to complete my Highers alongside this and the work experience element of my Foundation Apprenticeship -allowing me to stand out from others and get the job I wanted.”
