Last week Diane Kemp, Senior HR Advisor and colleagues from Springfield Properties visited Liberty Kids Nursery in Elgin, Moray to bring their world of work into the nursery.
They applied the construction firm’s activities cleverly to the story “The Three Little Pigs”. It allowed Diane and her team to talk about the different roles/jobs there are in the process of building a house.
The pupils were then shown what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) construction workers wore for their roles.
The group was then split into three where each group had to build a house with different sized blocks. Also, they used play dough and colouring in crayons and pencils to create the three little pigs.
The children had been learning about where their parents work and the variety of different jobs that are available. This was an excellent example of an employer engaging with the early years in Education to inspire, address stereotypes and make learning about the world of work enjoyable for children.
“We were delighted to be invited to the Nursery. My Daughter is in P1 so I planned the visit with her very much in mind – how do I keep her attention? How does she enjoy to learn? How do I talk to her at home about Mum’s job in construction? We recognise at Springfield just how important it is for industry to play their part in helping children and young people gain skills for learning, life and work. The visit has also given us confidence to go into early years environments; five year olds aren’t so scary after all!”
DYW Moray are aiming to encourage more employers locally in Moray to engage with those in the earlier stages of their education.
Sarah Baxter, DYW Moray Manager said,
“We can greatly influence our young people at an earlier stage than we often think, especially when it comes to stereotypes of genders in the workplace. A great example of this is in the following link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3Aweo-74kY. We would like more employers, link Springfield Properties to help the younger years learn in an interactive and engaging way, that there are a variety of careers paths in Moray for them to experience and pursue. Their visit to Liberty Kids Nursery is a great example for other employers to follow.”
